Responsibilities

Youll work as part of an Applied Science team on high-impact, technically ambitious AI projects that directly shape the future of Microsoft 365 Copilot in Excel including

You will design, fine-tune, and deliver models and agentic flows for integration with Excel Agent and on-canvas experiences.
You will leverage state-of-the-art LLM fine-tuning and retrieval methods, with robust evaluation metrics and A/B testing to ensure data-driven progress.
You will gather and curate relevant benchmarks, build a comprehensive evaluation framework, and develop GPT-based evaluators (LLM-as-a-Judge). Run controlled experiments to compare performance, efficiency, and scalability using data-driven metrics and A/B testing focusing on reproducible and impactful results.
You will continuously study emerging literature, share insights with leadership and peers during research reviews and deep dives adapt quickly to new findings, and integrate them into experiments and when applicable share with broader research community.

Requirements:
M.Sc. / Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Data Science (Ph.D. strongly preferred). Candidates with masters degrees with proven industry experience or a strong publication record in the areas of LLM, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Deep Learning are considered as well.

We require strong hands-on (at least 3+ years) of experience in building and deploying Machine Learning products. Key areas of expertise include Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models, along with an understanding of concepts such as Privacy and Responsible AI. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong history of successfully translating applied research into production-ready solutions, along with a proven track record of delivering projects within large-scale production environments.

Data Scientist, Product Analytics Responsibilities
Work with large and complex data sets to solve a wide array of challenging problems using different analytical and statistical approaches
Apply technical expertise with quantitative analysis, experimentation, data mining, and the presentation of data to develop strategies for our products that serve billions of people and hundreds of millions of businesses
Identify and measure success of product efforts through goal setting, forecasting, and monitoring of key product metrics to understand trends
Define, understand, and test opportunities and levers to improve the product, and drive roadmaps through your insights and recommendations
Partner with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams to inform, influence, support, and execute product strategy and investment decisions

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, a relevant technical field, or equivalent
6+ years of experience with data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), and/or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R)
6+ years of experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches, understanding ecosystems, user behaviors & long-term product trends, and leading data-driven projects from definition to execution [including defining metrics, experiment, design, communicating actionable insights]
Preferred Qualifications
Master's or Ph.D. Degree in a quantitative field

Our interns have an opportunity to make core algorithmic advances and apply their ideas at an unprecedented scale.

Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.
Research Scientist Intern, AI Core Machine Learning (PhD) Responsibilities
Develop novel state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and corresponding systems, leveraging various deep learning techniques.
Analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of corresponding deployed algorithms.
Perform state of the art research to advance the science and technology of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Devise better data-driven models for information retrieval, Multi-modal fusion, generation or media understanding (CV, NLP, Speech/ Audio).
Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners including communicating research plans, progress, and results.
Contribute to research that can be applied to Meta product development.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Information or Multimedia Retrieval, Reinforcement Learning, Mathematics, Signal Processing, or relevant technical field
Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Experience with Python, C++, C, Java or other related language
Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch or Tensorflow
Experience building systems based on machine learning and/or deep learning methods
Research experience with algorithms for sequential decision-making, e.g., planning, reinforcement learning, or similar
Preferred Qualifications
Intent to return to degree program after the completion of the internship/co-op
Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, AISTATS, RecSys, KDD, IJCAI, CVPR, ECCV, ACL, NAACL, EACL, ICASSP, or similar
Demonstrated experience and self-driven motivation in solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches
